Educational - Catch the Spirit of Innovation
Overview
The Curtiss Museum is a unique facility that focuses on early aviation, local history and the creative genius of Glenn H. Curtiss. Featured are: early aircraft, bicycles and motorcycles,
engines, boats, an early travel trailer and a large display of early 1900's Americana.
Artifacts include: antique dolls, toys, clothing, farm implements, fire engines and much more. Permanent exhibits also include displays pertaining to The Civil War, World War I and World
War II. Special exhibits throughout the year feature such temporary displays as Miniatures and Dollhouses, Quilts and Embroidery and Transportation.
All tours are guided by trained volunteer docents who are briefed on the age level of the tour group and any specific themes that are being studied by the visiting student or adult groups.
The Curtiss Museum staff strives to make the learning relevant and enjoyable.
It is recommended that you schedule your educational tour at least one month in advance. Have several possible dates in mind when you contact the museum to schedule. May and June fill
up fast. Make sure to state the program you are interested in and the grade level if it will be a school tour. Schools should provide one chaperone for every ten students.
Please contact the Education Director if you have requests or requirements. |

Programs
Overview
Tours begin with a video on Curtiss and his achievements (7 minutes for younger children and 14 minutes for grade 4 through adult). We offer traditional tours, Document-Based Questions
(DBQ), ELA lessons and our "In Flight" Program. The tour includes a visit to our Restoration Shop, where volunteers work daily at restoring aircraft. The tour concludes with time for
children to try the six stations of the Hands-On Gallery.
The Glenn Curtiss Story
This general tour is suitable for all ages. The tour begins with a film and continues with a guided tour and visit to the restoration shop. (1-1 1/2 hours)
In Flight (middle school)
Four part program that is interdisciplinary with their school programs.
Part I--Science & Technology
Part II--History
Part III--Language Arts
Part IV--"Flight Fair"--an enjoyable, competitive finale (paper airplanes, propulsion, & creating flying objects).
Archeological Dig
An outdoor, on site simulated dig which is ideal for 6th graders as they research the early world and the procedures used by archeologists when working on a dig. We prefer to have no
more than 30 students on the site per session.
